Yamaha R6 - Rear Peg Lights Tutorial
Step 1
We'll start with the styrene enclosure. In case you have a hard time finding the plastic, here's a screen shot of what I used.
Step 2
Next you want to take your piece of cardboard or paper and stick it on the inside of one of your rear pegs and trace the curve to create a template. I will look like an S when you're done and it should be around 5 1/2" to 6" tall. Take your template and cut out the S shape.
I wanted to recess my LEDs so I decided to make the faceplate of the enclosure 4mm deep. Since the sheet styrene was only 1mm deep I had to layer it. Lay the template on top of the styrene and trace it. Then use a straight edge and draw a line across the top of your S on the styrene. Measure over 15mm on the top and bottom of the S and draw another S. Repeat this 13 times (I'll explain later) until you have something similar to the following.
Step 3
Now that you have all of your curves drawn you need to cut them out. Take the Xacto knife and lightly trace the straight line at the top. Repeat this step a few times and you should have a decent score. Gently bend the top part of the plastic back until it snaps off at the score line. Now gently score the curves and break each one off as you go. Don't worry about them being perfect, they won't be. That's what sanding is for!
After all of your pieces are broken, there will be a little lip of plastic where you scored and snapped it. Take a fine grade of sand paper and sand this off so that the tops and bottoms are perfectly smooth.
Step 4
Now we're ready to glue a few layers together. Test fit four pieces by staking them on top of one another until you have your 4mm thickness. If they all lay flat and match fairly well you can glue them together. Take the stack apart and apply a thin layer of CA glue to one side of the piece. Lay another piece on top of that one and keep going until you have all four glued together. Take a couple of the small clamps that you have and clamp the piece and let it sit for a good 10 or 15 minutes.
In the mean time, glue another stack of four pieces the same way. Then glue together two stacks of two pieces so that you have two 2mm S curves. These will be used for the back of the enclosure.
